Arctic sea ice in the Mediterranean is a new feature, only enabled by the weak sun that presently causes global cooling around Italy. Beach holidays in Italy, adieu! Our Friends, the Friends of Science have launched a Facebook site to reach the younger retired engineers, who spend an average of two hours a day on (anti-)social media. A candidate for public office in any contemporary democracy may have to consider what, if anything, to do about "global warming." Candidates should understand that the oft-repeated claim that nearly all scientists demand that something dramatic be done to stop global warming is not true. In fact, a large and growing number of distinguished scientists and engineers do not agree that drastic actions on global warming are needed.

In September, Nobel Prize-winning physicist Ivar Giaever, a supporter of President Obama in the last election, publicly resigned from the American Physical Society (APS) with a letter that begins: "I did not renew [my membership] because I cannot live with the [APS policy] statement: 'The evidence is incontrovertible: Global warming is occurring. If no mitigating actions are taken, significant disruptions in the Earth's physical and ecological systems, social systems, security and human health are likely to occur. We must reduce emissions of greenhouse gases beginning now.' The Best Part About Global Warming

A POPULAR cold-weather complaint of recent winters - if the world is getting warmer, why is there 15 inches of snow in Central Park right now? - has been quietly laid aside this year. Schoolchildren who had anticipated snow days and sledding will tell you that the weather has been disappointingly mild; in fact, since record keeping began, the park has experienced only one warmer winter, in 2001-2.

The trend holds at a national level, too. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, this January was the fourth warmest in the documented history of weather in the contiguous United States.

If anything, the exceptional snowstorms of last winter and the uncommon gentleness of this one are further evidence of global warming, which is characterized by extreme and erratic weather patterns rather than an unceasing rise of the planet's temperature. Read More...

Research just published by McGill and Concordia University alarmists in the popular weather comic Environmental Research Letters has Canadian ice-hockey fans sitting up and taking notice: in their paper Observed decreases in the Canadian outdoor skating season due to recent winter warming, the authors defined criteria for the beginning (3 consecutive daytime highs at or below -5C) and length of the outdoor ice-hockey season and determined that since 1951 many locations, particularly in SW and Central Canada, showed statistically significant decreases. Projecting the most extreme trend, that for the SW, into the future suggests the region’s outdoor hockey rinks could be ice-free by mid-century.

The implications of this are potentially devastating for Canadian hockey. Many past and current heroes of the sport, including the great Gretzky, spent their formative years honing their checking and fighting techniques (as well as the less important stick-handling and skating capabilities) on backyard or neighborhood outdoor ice rinks. If those facilities are no longer available, critical Canadian hockey skills will be lost. The recent cold sun and the lack of global warming for the last 15 14 10 years had its effect on the arctic sea ice: it shrank between 1980 and 2012. But hey, this is a trick by the alarmists: while the surface area covered by the sea ice is much smaller in 2012 than in 1980, it surely must be much thicker now.

OTTAWA - A leading California-based atmospheric scientist says he is ``troubled'' about the teachings of a climate-change skeptic at Ottawa's Carleton University following an audit that uncovered 142 claims made by the Canadian instructor that were seen as providing a misleading or inaccurate portrayal of peer-reviewed scientific research linking human activity to global warming.

Ben Santer, who has published about 80 peer-reviewed scientific articles on climate-change science since 1985 and continues to conduct research in the field, said he would be asking the university for an explanation about the claims made by the instructor, Tom Harris, who taught a class between 2009 and 2011 before it was removed from the curriculum.
